This is not really about sewing but it is about clothing so, close enough? This delightful lady is 87. (article) I'm not on Instagram but I'm tempted to sign up just so I can follow her. Feast your eyes on the color, style, and confidence.
No, I'm not about to start dressing like that. Not really my style and besides, my fashion-conservative husband would either divorce me or try to have me committed if I did, but the point is, she's doing her own thing and enjoying what's left of her life. No matter what your age, life is too short to let other people tell you what to wear so wear what you like, what you feel good in, and don't be afraid to be a little out there. And one of the greatest things about sewing is that we can. We're not stuck with what the fashion industry thinks we should be wearing this season.
I used to think that clothes were just clothes, but I've come to believe that wearing clothes that make you feel good and that express your personality is really a kind of self-care. Dressing to please yourself (rather than others) is a powerful way of affirming that you matter. At least it has been for me.
ReplyDeleteExactly. I think clothes change the way you think about yourself. Also, I think that as you get older it's easier to be yourself. At least that's been my experience.
DeleteMine too. I actually really enjoy the "Invisibility Cloak" that being a middle-aged woman gives me. I feel freer to wear what I like, even if it isn't in style at the moment, because nobody notices me. I keep telling my partner that I should become a jewel thief or international spy or something because nobody would suspect the harmless-looking middle-aged woman in sensible shoes. ;)
